Myth: A person must be physically assaulted to be a victim of domestic violence.
Fact: Verbal abuse and threats of physical violence can be as damaging or worse than actual physical abuse.
Physical abuse heals, while emotional abuse may linger indefinitely causing serious psychological problems.
Myth: A victim must have pictures and or audio tapes of the abuse in order to get an order of protection.
Fact: The Courts will accept credible and compelling testimony from a victim of domestic violence or any person
who witnessed the physical or mental abuse.
Myth: The victim had to have called the police after the incident in order to be successful in Court.
Fact: The Courts do not require police reports to be filed in order for them to grant an order of protection. In fact, the Courts understand that many victims do not call the police for financial, family, and safety reasons.
